Duke MBA Leadership and Ethics Curriculum | Extracurricular Programs
Leadership development can be acquired not only through didactic course work, but also through experiential exercises, through practical and extracurricular activities.
One of Fuqua's strengths is the passion of its students for leadership development. Fuqua offers students leadership development opportunities beyond the classroom context. Two main groups for doing such are the COLE Leadership Fellows Program and the Leadership Development Initiative (LDI).
The COLE Leadership Fellows Program engages a select group of Fuqua Second Year Daytime MBA students in its mission to advance leadership and ethics through research and education. Fellows support COLE in its research, education, and operational activities and help represent Fuqua's culture of leadership and teamwork. Specifically, fellows help to develop and communicate COLE's leadership messages, provide programmatic support for its activities (both at Fuqua and globally), and help generate ideas and build the tools needed for students to develop their personal leadership. COLE Leadership Fellows undergo an intensive training session on team facilitation and coaching and apply this learning in their work with incoming first year students during Fuqua's Global Institute program/curriculum. Fellows are selected through a competitive application process based on leadership experience, diversity of leadership styles, character, vision, ideas, passion, and commitment.
COLE develops and offers curricular and extracurricular programs for Fuqua's MBA and executive students. The center provides advisory support and other essential services to existing groups such as the Leadership Development Initiative (LDI).
The LDI is a student-run club, that provides Fuqua students with specific tools for leading successfully and making a positive impact in their upcoming personal and professional lives. Through this program, students at Fuqua can study leadership models and theory, observe outstanding leaders in practice, and personally experience leadership through numerous extracurricular activities. Combined, these approaches to leadership education result in a person who is better prepared to lead successfully in their various spheres of influence. The LDI provides experiential workshops, informative seminars, General Meetings, and the capstone LDI Conference –The Duke MBA Leadership Experience. The MBA Association Leadership Development Cabinet is responsible for directing the program. COLE and LDI liaison and COLE Scholar Professor Joe LeBoeuf provide advisory support and other essential services.
